This spectacular part of County Clare and the Shannon Area are home to the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and the Shannon River Delta with the mystical Lough Dergh.

The magnificent Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, Ireland

Down in County Clare, walking toward your first look at the much photographed Cliffs of Moher , you get a breathtaking view of the 8 km stretch of cliffs that drops 200 meters into the icy blue Atlantic. With the creamy froth of the waves at their feet, sea birds all around, and the green of Ireland as a backdrop, the Cliffs of Moher have been formed over centuries by layers of siltstone, shale and sandstone. They rise from Hag's Head in the south and reach their highest point (214 meters) just north of O’Brien’s Tower.

The Cliffs of Moher are situated in Northwest County Clare in Ireland between Liscannor and Doolin, a village famous for its traditional music. On a clear day, you certainly can’t see forever, but you can see theAran Islands in Galway Bay as well as the valleys and hills of Connemara because on the West side of Ireland, away from heavy industry the air is remarkably clear.

Those with a good head for heights, should follow the path along edge of the cliffs. But be very careful, there are no real safety barriers and sections of the cliff sometimes give way.

The Burren - Walk, Trek, Hike or Cycle Tours

The Cliffs of Moher are located in this limestone plateau, called The Burren, which is a very unusual botanical environment as both Alpine and Mediterranean plants grow there. The Burren is a popular area for walking, hiking and trekking as well as cycling. Many companies offer a variety of walking and hiking tours on the Burren ranging from one hour to weekends and longer. Visitors should shop around and find a tour that suits their interests, their pockets and their level of fitness. Many of the tour companies offer guides as well as accommodation.

Take your time when traveling in Ireland

The distances between popular tourist sites in Ireland aren't great and it is easy to get from one place to another. Ireland is one of the few countries still safe enough to hitchhike, but it can take a while to get from one place to another as the roads are narrow and you often have to stop or slow down for livestock and heavy farm machinery.

Explore the Shannon River and Lough Derg

The River Shannon runs through this area with the beautiful Lough Derg, one of the oldest places of Christian pilgrimage in the world, at its southern end.

Killaloe is a good base for exploring Lough Derg, separated from its 'twin' town of Ballina by a bridge over the Shannon River. This is the center of a beautiful and historic district, a land of legend and story, endowed by nature, with a beauty unsurpassed in the surrounds of the Shannon basin.

It is easy to get to and from Shannon Airport , which is very close, from virtually any point throughout Ireland with Bus Eireann. Ireland is geared for tourists with great accommodation available ranging from resort hotels to a room in a family home to guest houses and backpackers' lodges.
