Irish Language and Culture, Lonely Planet

On the eve of St Patrick's Day, publishers Lonely Planet publish a new cultural guide to Ireland and the Irish. Irish Language and Culture is published March 16th

If you have ever been puzzled by anything Irish, from the words used to how to order a pint of Guinness, then a new cultural guide from guidebook publishers Lonely Planet will come to the rescue. Irish Language and Culture is not a conventional Lonely Planet guidebook, but one of their increasing range of books that deal with the cultures of the countries that people visit.

Lonely Planet already has a series of World Food Guides, which naturally includes a guide to the food of Ireland. Other titles in that series include guides to countries, cities and regions which have a strong food culture – places like Mexico, New Orleans, India, Italy, France and California.

Other Lonely Planet series include guides to walking, cycling, diving, snorkeling, National Parks, road trips, watching wildlife and healthy travel. In addition there are language packs, DVDs, photo books, practical guides and travel literature titles.

Irish Language and Culture is a new title in another short series which already features books on the language and culture of Britain and Australia. The brand new book on Ireland and the Irish tells you everything you need to know about the history of the Irish language, its place in society, common terms you might hear that deal with food, drink, sports and entertainment. The book is also packed with examples of slang, jargon and quirky Irish humor. It will even teach you how to chat up a local.

Irish Language and Culture is published on Friday, March 16th, 2007.
