The Dublin Bus Hop On-Hop Off Tour

Tour Takes Visitors to Top Dublin Attractions

May 6, 2009 Tina Costanza

The Dublin Bus hop on-hop off tour aims to give tourists the freedom to explore everything Dublin has to offer within 24 hours.

The bus tour itself lasts an hour and a half, and runs daily from 9:30 a.m. until about 6:30 p.m. Visitors can join the tour at any of 23 stops, each located near one of Dublin’s most popular attractions, such as Trinity College, the National Gallery, Temple Bar, Dublin Caste, Christchurch Cathedral, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Guinness Storehouse, Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin Zoo, the National Museum, the Old Jameson Distillery and the Writers Museum.

How The Dublin Bus Hop On-Hop Off Tour Works

Buses operate often and travellers can purchase tickets that are valid for 24 hours in advance or from the driver. The ticket allows tourists to “hop on” and off the bus as often as they wish. For instance, if a tourist joins the tour for the first time at 1 p.m. one day, he or she can visit a few attractions, and then be taken to other attractions along the route the next day, provided he or she boards the bus before 1 p.m.

The tour has a pre-recorded commentary in English, and some buses offer the commentary in Irish, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Chinese among its other languages. The English and multilingual tours both travel the same route. Bus stops along the route are easily identifiable by their green signs sporting a photo of the bus.

The buses themselves are double decker open top buses, so travellers can opt for a seat at ground level or “upstairs” and outside. The cushioned seats are actually quite comfortable, and the pre-recorded commentary is timed perfectly with each site along the route and details in the commentary help bring each attraction to life.

The Dublin Bus hop on-hop off tour’s official starting and ending point is on O’Connell Street in the city centre. If a tourist climbs aboard at any other point along the route he or she may have to transfer to another bus (at no extra cost) when the bus he or she first boarded reaches O’Connell Street again, if he or she wants to experience the entire tour.

How to Join The Dublin Bus Hop On-Hop Off Tour

The Dublin Bus hop on-hop off tour tickets (15 euro for an adult, 13 euro for students and seniors) can be purchased in advance at the Dublin Tourism Centre on Suffolk Street, or booked online up to an hour prior to departure.

The Dublin Bus hop on-hop off tour provides two things in one: On its own, as a bus tour, it’s comfortable, relaxing and informative. The fact it makes tourists feel like they have their own driver as they “hop on” and “hop off” to see the many sights, as well, eliminates the stress of visitors trying to figure out how to get from one point to another in a new city.
