Wexford Opera Festival 2008New Theatre Royal Opens in Time for Ireland's Big Music Event
The Wexford Festival Opera 2008 is from 16 October to 2 November. One way to get good tickets is to book an Irish cultural holiday with a tour company like Kudu Travel.
The Wexford Opera Festival (or the Wexford Festival Opera to give it its official title) has been running for over 50 years. The 2008 Festival will be its 57th season, and runs from 16th October to 2nd November. With over 50 events scheduled, and the opening of the completely rebuilt and now state-of-the-art Theatre Royal to celebrate, tickets for this year's Festival are going to be harder to find than ever. One way to guarantee good tickets for all three main operas being performed this year is to book an Irish cultural holiday with a tour operator, such as Kudu Travel. Kudu Travel's tour commences 20th October and as well as 6 nights in 4- and 5-star historic Georgian hotels, all transport, all meals and wine, it also provides transport to and tickets for the Festival's three main operas, which this year are:
The Wexford Festival Opera trip isn't all musical culture, though. There's a literary pub crawl and tickets for a play at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, days spent walking in the Wicklow Mountains and along deserted sandy beaches, an optional birdwatching trip and the chance to look for seals, tours of Dublin's best museums and galleries, and visits to Powerscourt Gardens, the James Joyce Museum and to the stunning 6th century monastic site at Glendalough, one of the most magical places in Ireland. The Wexford Opera Festival is obviously the highlight, and it has become one of the biggest social and musical events in the Irish calendar. It sees an annual transformation of the small town of Wexford, which has less than 20,000 people. Wexford was once a big port, but the harbour was continually silting up due to the shifting sands in the area, and a new port was built at Rosslare. The harbour area of Wexford is still one of its most attractive features, but today it is given over mostly to leisure boating and to small-scale fishing boats. The seafood around here is superb, both in Wexford and in Dublin, which is about 90 miles to the north. Combining the two for an Irish cultural holiday is ideal. The Kudu trip includes a lunch at one of Dublin's best seafood restaurants, and dinner in one of its Michelin-starred restaurants too.
